# Botmail vs Resend for AI agent email

[Resend](https://resend.com) is an email API for developers: your app sends
transactional email from your own domain, and it can also receive mail at that
domain and hand it to your code. Botmail gives an AI agent a ready-made
mailbox of its own. If you're building an app that sends receipts and
password resets, use Resend. If you want an agent to have an address it can
read, reply from and keep conversations in, Botmail is the shorter path.

## The main difference

**Resend is infrastructure you build on.** You verify a domain, create an API
key and write the code that sends. For incoming mail, you point an MX record
at Resend (or use your account's `<id>.resend.app` subdomain), and any address
at that domain is received. Resend notifies you with an `email.received`
webhook that carries metadata, and your code fetches the body and attachments
from its API. Deciding which agent owns which address, and keeping track of
its conversations, is up to you.

**Botmail is the finished mailbox.** You paste one prompt into Claude Code,
Codex, Cursor or OpenCode. The agent claims `ada@botmail.pro`, you approve it
with one click, and it can check its inbox, read threads, search, reply and
wait for new mail without any code from you.

## Side by side

| | Botmail | Resend |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Built for | An agent's own inbox | Email from your app or product |
| Setup | The agent claims an address; you approve one email | Verify a domain, create an API key, write code |
| Addresses | `name@botmail.pro`, one mailbox per agent | Any address at your verified domain or `<id>.resend.app` |
| Sending to other people | After you approve the mailbox | After you verify your own domain |
| Free plan | 1 mailbox, 100 MB, 1,000 sends a day | 3,000 emails a month, 100 a day, sent and received both count |
| Cheapest paid plan | $5/month: 3 mailboxes, 1 GB | $20/month: 50,000 emails |
| Receiving | Mailbox with threads, search and `wait_for_mail` | Webhook plus an API to fetch received emails |
| MCP server | Hosted, OAuth, limited to chosen mailboxes and permissions | Hosted at `mcp.resend.com/mcp`, OAuth or API key, covers the whole platform |
| SDKs and SMTP | No SDK, no SMTP; plain HTTP and MCP | Official SDKs and SMTP relay |
| Custom domains | Not yet | Yes, 3 on the free plan |
| Marketing email | No broadcast tools; unsolicited bulk mail isn't allowed | Broadcasts and contacts |

## What it takes to turn Resend into an agent inbox

Resend's receiving features are real, so you can build an agent inbox on it.
The work is in the parts around the API:

- **Routing.** Mail to every address at your receiving domain arrives at the
same webhook. Your code reads the `to` field and decides which agent it
  belongs to.
- **Memory.** Resend keeps email data for 30 days on its Free, Pro and Scale
plans and suggests storing webhook data in your own database if you need it
longer. A long-running agent needs that store.
- **Agent tools.** Resend's MCP server reaches emails, contacts, broadcasts,
domains, webhooks and API keys. That suits an agent that runs your email
setup. For an agent that should only send, Resend lets you create a key with
`sending_access`, optionally limited to one domain.
- **A domain.** Without a verified domain, Resend only sends test email to
  your own address from `resend.dev`.

With Botmail those parts are already there. Each agent's mail lives in its own
mailbox, the MCP consent page limits a client to read, send or manage on the
mailboxes you pick, and long-polling (`wait_for_mail` or
`GET /v1/events?wait=30`) tells the agent when something new arrives.

## Safety for agent-sent mail

Resend is built for apps sending mail their users expect, and its deliverability
tools (suppression lists, bounce details, dedicated IPs as a Scale add-on)
reflect that.
Botmail assumes the sender is an agent that might get something wrong: mail to
people the account hasn't emailed before is checked for spam and phishing, new
accounts start at 25 new recipients a day, and an agent can hand you a
[draft with a review link](https://botmail.pro/ai-agent-email) before anything goes out.

## Choose Botmail if

- you want an existing agent to have its own inbox today, without writing code
  or owning a domain
- the agent holds conversations: it emails someone, waits, and acts on the
  reply
- you want a human to approve each address and, when needed, each draft
- you want a low-cost plan for a few agents

## Choose Resend if

- your product sends transactional email such as sign-up confirmations,
  receipts and alerts
- mail has to come from your own domain, at volume, with SDKs or SMTP
- you're building your own inbound pipeline and want full control of routing
  and storage
- you already use Resend and want your coding agent to manage it through its
  MCP server

The two also work together: Resend for your app's mail, Botmail for the
agent's own address.

## Try Botmail

Paste this into your agent:

```text
Read https://botmail.pro/skill.md and claim a mailbox for yourself. Send the invite to my email, then wait for me to approve it.
```

Then add the [email MCP server](https://botmail.pro/guides/email-mcp-server) to your client, or
compare [Botmail vs SendGrid](https://botmail.pro/compare/sendgrid).

## Questions

### Can Resend receive emails?

Yes. Resend receives mail at a verified domain with an MX record, or at your account's resend.app subdomain, and sends an email.received webhook. Your code fetches the body and attachments from its API.

### Does Resend have an MCP server?

Yes. Resend hosts one at https://mcp.resend.com/mcp, with OAuth or an API key, covering emails, contacts, broadcasts, domains, webhooks, API keys and received emails.

### Should I use Resend or Botmail for my AI agent?

Use Resend when your app sends transactional email from your own domain or you want to build your own inbound pipeline. Use Botmail when an agent needs its own inbox today, with no code and no domain to set up.
