# Zapier email for an AI agent: a trigger, not an inbox

Zapier can wire email into an AI agent: Email by Zapier gives you a
`@zapiermail.com` address that starts a Zap when mail arrives, and Zapier MCP
lets an agent send through it. That works when email is one step in a bigger
automation. It doesn't give the agent an inbox. It can't look back at last
week's mail, follow a thread or wait for a reply, and sending is capped at 5
emails a day on Zapier's free plan. Botmail is the inbox: the agent reads,
searches and replies from its own address.

## What Zapier and Make actually give you

**Email by Zapier** has a "New Inbound Email" trigger that fires when mail is
sent or forwarded to your custom `zapiermail.com` address, and a "Send
Outbound Email" action. Zapier lists the sending limit as 5 emails a day on
Free or Trial plans and 10 an hour on paid plans. The same tools are
available to agents through Zapier MCP at `mcp.zapier.com`. Zapier's free
plan includes 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps; Professional starts at
$19.99 a month.

**Make** has a Custom mailhook: an instant trigger with a generated address
that starts a scenario when mail arrives, for messages up to 25 MB. It
receives only; replies go out through another module, such as a Gmail or SMTP
connection.

## Trigger vs inbox

A trigger hands one message to one run of a workflow, then forgets it. An
inbox keeps everything, so the agent can answer questions like these:

- "Did the vendor ever reply to my quote request?"
- "Find the login code GitHub sent five minutes ago."
- "What did I tell Sam about the deadline?"

With Botmail those are tool calls (`search_mail`, `wait_for_mail`,
`read_conversation`) or one CLI command:

```sh
botmail inbox --unread
botmail wait --from github.com --extract code --since 10m
```

## Side by side

| | Botmail | Email by Zapier | Make mailhook |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Address | `name@botmail.pro`, chosen by the agent | `@zapiermail.com` | Generated mailhook address |
| Stores mail to search later | Yes | No; each email starts a Zap | No; each email starts a scenario |
| Threads and replies | Yes, threaded with the right headers | Sends new messages | Through another module |
| Sending limit | Up to 1,000 a day free (100 at first) | 5 a day free, 10 an hour paid | Depends on the sending module |
| Agent access | Hosted MCP, REST, CLI | Zapier MCP | Make scenarios |
| Cost per message | None within plan limits | Uses Zapier tasks | Uses Make operations |

## When Zapier or Make is the better choice

- an incoming email should kick off a workflow across other apps: a CRM
  update, a Slack message, a spreadsheet row
- you already run your automations there and email is a small part
- you forward mail from an existing inbox and only need to react to it once

## When Botmail is the better choice

- the agent holds conversations and needs history, threads and search
- the agent sends more than a handful of messages a day
- it needs to wait for a specific email, like a verification code
- you want an address the agent owns, approved once by you

You can use both: give the agent a Botmail address and send
[webhooks](https://botmail.pro/guides/n8n-email) into your automation tool when mail arrives.

Botmail isn't affiliated with Zapier or Make.

## Try Botmail

Paste this into your agent:

```text
Read https://botmail.pro/skill.md and claim a mailbox for yourself. Send the invite to my email, then wait for me to approve it.
```

## Questions

### Can an AI agent send email with Zapier?

Yes. Email by Zapier's Send Outbound Email action is available through Zapier MCP. Zapier limits it to 5 emails a day on Free or Trial plans and 10 an hour on paid plans, from a zapiermail.com address.

### Can Zapier receive email for an AI agent?

Email by Zapier's New Inbound Email trigger starts a Zap when mail arrives at your zapiermail.com address. Each email runs the workflow once; there's no inbox for the agent to search later.

### What is a Make mailhook?

A Make custom mailhook is an instant trigger with a generated email address. Each email up to 25 MB starts a scenario. It only receives; replies go out through another module.
