# Can ChatGPT send emails?

Yes, from your own account. If you connect Gmail or Outlook, ChatGPT can
draft an email in the chat and you choose whether to send it. OpenAI's
release notes list this on the web for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise
plans. What ChatGPT doesn't have is an address of its own. For that you
connect an email MCP server such as Botmail, which needs a plan where
ChatGPT allows custom MCP apps with write actions.

## Sending from your Gmail or Outlook

OpenAI's June 2026 release notes describe it like this: with Gmail or
Outlook connected, you ask ChatGPT to draft and send an email, ChatGPT
creates a draft, and you can choose to send it without leaving the chat.

What that means in practice:

- **The email comes from you.** Recipients see your address and reply to
  your inbox.
- **You press send.** ChatGPT prepares the draft; the decision stays with
  you.
- **ChatGPT reads your mailbox to help.** The connected Gmail app searches
  your mail to answer questions, so your whole account is in reach.
- **Plus and Pro can react to new mail.** OpenAI added scheduled tasks in
  ChatGPT Work that can respond to new Gmail messages, for example to
  summarize an announcement or draft next steps.

This is the right tool when you want help writing your own email. It is a
poor fit when ChatGPT should act as a separate assistant, for example
emailing vendors under its own name or collecting replies in a place that
isn't your inbox.

## Giving ChatGPT its own address

ChatGPT can connect to remote MCP servers as custom apps. Botmail is one, at
`https://botmail.pro/mcp`, so ChatGPT can use a mailbox such as
`ada@botmail.pro`: check the inbox, read conversations, reply and send.

Check your plan first. OpenAI's documentation is still moving here:

- OpenAI's developer docs say developer mode, which adds any remote MCP
  server as an app, is available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Edu
  accounts on the web, with write actions subject to confirmation.
- OpenAI's help center says full MCP support including write actions is in
  beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro users can connect MCP
  servers with read and fetch permissions only.

If your plan only allows read actions, ChatGPT can read the agent's inbox
but can't send or reply. In that case use Codex, below.

### 1. Claim a mailbox

The Botmail MCP server can't create mailboxes, and claiming one takes a few
web requests, so do this step in an agent that can make them, such as Codex
or Claude Code:

```text
Read https://botmail.pro/skill.md and claim a mailbox for yourself. Send the invite to my email, then wait for me to approve it.
```

Open the approval email, sign in with GitHub or Google and accept.

### 2. Add Botmail to ChatGPT

OpenAI's developer docs describe the steps as: turn on **Developer mode** in
Settings, under Security and login, then create an app for your remote MCP
server and select it from the Developer mode tool in the composer. ChatGPT
supports streaming HTTP and OAuth for these apps, which is what Botmail uses.
Menu names have changed between releases, so look for the option to add a
custom MCP server or app if the labels differ.

On Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin turns on developer mode
or custom MCP apps for the workspace first.

When ChatGPT connects, a Botmail page opens. Sign in, choose the permissions
(read, send, manage) and the mailboxes ChatGPT may use, and press Allow.
More detail is in [ChatGPT email setup](https://botmail.pro/guides/chatgpt-email).

## The Codex route

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, and it uses MCP servers directly. Add this to
`~/.codex/config.toml`:

```toml
[mcp_servers.botmail]
url = "https://botmail.pro/mcp"
```

Then run `codex mcp login botmail` and approve access in the browser. Codex
can then send, reply and wait for mail from its own address. See
[Give Codex its own email address](https://botmail.pro/guides/codex-email).

## Side by side

| | Gmail or Outlook in ChatGPT | Botmail over MCP |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sends from | Your address | The agent's `@botmail.pro` address |
| Replies go to | Your inbox | The agent's mailbox |
| What ChatGPT can read | Your mailbox | Only mail sent to the agent's address |
| Plans | Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise (web) | Depends on custom MCP and write-action support |
| Who sends | You, from the draft | The agent, or you via a draft review link |

## A prompt to try

Once Botmail is connected with send permission:

```text
Using your Botmail mailbox, draft an email to orders@northwind.co asking for the status of order 4471. Don't send it: give me the review link so I can check it first.
```

The review link opens a page with the email and Send and Discard buttons, no
sign-in needed. Mail to new recipients is checked for spam and phishing, and
new accounts can email 25 new recipients a day. For how it all fits
together, read [Email for AI agents](https://botmail.pro/ai-agent-email).

## Questions

### Can ChatGPT send emails from Gmail?

Yes. With Gmail or Outlook connected, ChatGPT drafts the email in the chat and you choose to send it. OpenAI lists this on the web for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans.

### Can ChatGPT have its own email address?

Yes, through a custom MCP app such as Botmail at https://botmail.pro/mcp. Sending needs a plan where ChatGPT allows write actions for custom MCP apps.

### Can ChatGPT Pro use custom MCP servers to send email?

OpenAI's documentation differs: its developer docs list Pro and Plus for developer mode, while its help center says Pro users get read and fetch actions only. Check your settings, or use Codex, which supports MCP directly.
